OAA: Outdoor Adventurous Activities
We firmly believe that the partnership between home and school is paramount in enabling your child/ren to fulfil their potential and we ask our families to support their child’s learning through the completion of homework tasks.
Homework is set in order to encourage pupils to develop the skills, motivation, self-discipline and confidence required to study effectively as independent and life-long learners. Homework also provides opportunities for the involvement of parents/carers in their child’s education, keeping them informed about their children’s learning at school.
We also firmly believe that family time is invaluable and that children’s learning goes way beyond the school gates. With this in mind we have reviewed our homework expectations and an updated policy can be found on the school websites.
Achieving the right balance of homework set is difficult as families have their own expectations for what they deem an acceptable amount. To overcome this and continue to ensure our high expectations for the children’s attainment, we have adapted our homework policy as follows:
Children will be expected to complete the following core homework activities:
Key Stage Two Core activities (years 3 – 6):
- Learn a set of spellings for a weekly test
- Read daily from a selection of books and record their reading in their reading record book
- Learn their times tables
For families who wish to complete additional learning activities with their child, the following optional activities will be available:
KS2 Optional additional activities:
- Times Table and Vocab Apps
developing your child’s experiences and life skills through visits to museums and places of interest, researching school topics or topics of interest, visiting the library, making models and games, playing board games, drawing maps and plans, taking photographs etc.
The optional additional activities will provide open access to these educational programs for children to access as many activities as they would like. Homework will not be provided for children who miss schooling due to a holiday. Parents/ Carers may wish to ask their child/ren to complete a holiday diary should they wish to.
During school holidays, children are expected to continue with the core homework tasks and can access the optional tasks at their choice. No additional homework tasks will be set for school holidays.
Homework activities should be an enjoyable experience for families. If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child completing the core homework tasks, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
For spellings children will be given a spelling sheet at the start of each half term – spellings will need to be learnt weekly and will be tested on the Friday of each week. Children can practice their spellings online at home at: https://spellingframe.co.uk/ all they need is the rule for that week (stated on their spelling sheet) and they can find the games to play. Spellings for each term are glued into the reading diary on a termly basis.
Your child will bring home a reading book every school night based on the Accelerated Reader scheme; please encourage your child to read at home as much as they can. Please encourage your child to read at home as much as they can. Please could you listen to your child read, discuss the book with them as well as ask questions to help build their comprehension skills. Please indicate in their reading record when they have read. Children are asked to read at home 5 times a week. They receive a certificate each week if they read at least 4 times! Please indicate in their reading contact book when they have read and/or completed a book in order for it to be changed.
